Unfortunately our beloved studio has been sold which means we have to move BUT… we have found a fantastic space just down the road!  We’re so excited to build a bigger and better teaching studio for you all!

We have a vision of The Art Room that includes further supporting our students and opening up our programs to the wider public through free art talks and workshops, and panel discussions where you can hear top Melbourne artists discuss their practices and careers.  We want to provide large drawing events where professional artists and art students will be able to undertake life-drawing unlike anything previously offered in Melbourne.

Currently the building is just an empty shell and over the next few months we’ll be transforming it into a fabulous, large light-filled studio situated between Yaraville, Seddon and Footscray.  This will allow us to nearly double our teaching space, provide free parking and hugely improve our facilities.  The new building will enable us to create more exciting art experiences, be more inventive in our classes, and employ more wonderful teachers and life models.  While not being used as a teaching space it will also open up the opportunity to become a pop up theater and performance space and venue for exhibitions!  We will be open to all ideas!

To bring our vision to life we need your help.  We’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign to help us cover some of the costs of moving and rebuilding.  There are lots of fantastic rewards on offer including limited edition prints by our teachers, life drawing extravaganzas and Corporate Sponsorship for businesses.  Please join our campaign and share our story with your friends by 9pm July 22nd.  A HUGE thank you to everyone that has supported our campaign so far!! x

Teacher Feature – Ilona Nelson

Hi everyone!  I’m Ilona and I work behind the scenes looking after The Art Room’s social media, I also teach photography, and I’ve met a few of you when I’ve dropped into classes to take photographs for the website.

I teach Chasing the Light a short course for beginners to learn how to take control of your camera by using Manual rather than Auto settings.  This course is designed to give you practical advice and tips to help you create the photographs you want without spending lots of money on camera gear.

I’m also working on an e-book called The White Cube which is for emerging artists and is a how-to guide for hosting a successful exhibition.  I’ll be teaching The White Cube workshop at The Art Room in 2016 but in the meantime I’ll be giving a free lecture Social Media for Artists as part of Open Studios in November.

In my personal practice I work predominately with photography but also incorporate performance, film and installation.  I’m working on a variety of projects at the moment – one is onefourfour where I invite 12 women artists to create one work a month for one year, another is This Wild Song which is a series of conceptual portraits of Australian women artists.  A huge thank you to Erika and The Art Room for supporting these projects!

I look forward to meeting you at The Art Room soon!
