Ilona Nelson is a Melbourne based photographic and new media artist who completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (majoring in photography) with distinction in 1998.  Since then she has exhibited extensively and been selected in numerous prizes throughout Australia including The Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Tattersall’s Contemporary Art Prize and The Flanagan Art Prize.  Her imagery has been featured in many publications including The Age, frankie magazine and Harper’s Bazaar Australia magazine.

Ilona works predominately with photography but also incorporates film, performance and installation.  She is currently working towards a solo exhibition at Town Hall Gallery (Hawthorn) in January 2015 entitled thisplace. which will explore the complexities of motherhood.  Ilona has also created and curated onefourfour and This Wild Song which are projects that support Australian women artists by creating opportunities to collaborate with peers, create new work and promote their art.

Ilona is also interested in creating opportunities for artists to learn about the machinations of being an artist, in particular how to write proposals, put together media packs and everything else outside the studio.  Keep an eye out for future workshops at The Art Room.
