Our Foundation Painting Program is an immersive and comprehensive pathway designed for artists who want to grow their confidence and skill with paint. Rather than a single course, the program unfolds in distinct stages, each building on the last while offering flexible entry points depending on your experience and goals.
The early stages establish the foundations of oil painting – introducing essential skills and techniques – before moving into more advanced explorations such as glazing, colour mixing, and expanding the painter’s toolbox. Midway, the program broadens to include enrichment opportunities like Blending Bootcamp and Photoshop for Painters that allow artists to refine specific aspects of their practice.
Later stages focus on more complex investigations, such as The Painter’s Lens: Interpreting Photographic Portraits, where photography becomes a source for generating nuanced, contemporary painted portraits.
While each stage stands alone, the greatest depth and continuity emerge when experienced as an integrated journey within The Art Room’s broader framework, which also includes Open Studio and Expanded Practice.
How the Foundation Painting Program unfolds:

Painting 1 & 2 – Building the Foundation
These two courses are designed as a paired foundation. Painting 1 introduces and develops the core skills of oil painting, while Painting 2 expands your technical range through glazing and other approaches. They can be taken individually or together as an 18-week sequence. -
Painting Enrichment – Deepening the Practice
A series of shorter workshops and optional studio sessions that allow you to refine and expand your skills, including Colourmixing, Blending Bootcamp, and Photoshop for Painters. -
Painting 3 – The Painter’s Lens
Painting 3 is an advanced course that explores photography as a tool for painting practice, using photographic portraits as the basis for generating dynamic and thoughtful painted works.
