The Foundation Drawing Program is a comprehensive, four-part course made up of four 8-week terms. Each term builds on the last, developing essential drawing skills, knowledge, and understanding while exploring drawing as a powerful tool for observation, thinking, and personal expression.

Through the program, you’ll gain confidence, expand your visual literacy, and cultivate a dynamic and rewarding long-term practice. While you’re welcome to enrol in individual terms, the program is designed to be most beneficial when undertaken sequentially as a cohesive learning pathway.

Thoughtfully integrated within The Art Room’s holistic learning framework, which also includes Open Studio and Expanded Practice, the Foundation Drawing Program provides an ideal foundation for further independent and advanced study. You can begin in either Term 1 or Term 3, starting your drawing practice at the time that suits you best.

How the Foundation Drawing Program unfolds:

  • Drawing 1 & 2 – Building the Foundation
Drawing 1 is designed to build your fundamental skills, knowledge, and confidence – equipping you with the essential tools for a lifelong drawing practice. Through structured exercises, you’ll develop new ways of seeing, thinking, and problem-solving, with an emphasis on process over outcome. The course aims to dissolve fear and self-judgement, opening you to the rich and expansive world of drawing and cultivating a confident, curious, and flexible approach.

  • Drawing 2 builds on the skills and knowledge developed in Drawing 1, focusing on depth rather than difficulty, so you can fully embed your foundational practice. You’ll have the opportunity to consolidate your skills, exploring both perceptual and conceptual aspects of drawing, while applying your knowledge to more sustained projects and developing essential creative habits.
  • Drawing Practice – Deepening the Practice
Drawing Practice consists of four term-based units, each centred around a core theme that connects all exercises and projects. Designed to help you continue developing your foundational skills, it also introduces conceptual thinking and idea generation. You’ll start with guided projects and then be encouraged to create work that is personally meaningful, exploring a variety of materials and processes while strengthening your creative practice.
