THE PAINTERS LENS: INTERPRETING PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS
Explore the dynamic relationship between painting and photography in our Portraiture course!

In this 6 week study, we’ll uncover how photography is not an adversary to painting, but rather a powerful aid in the creation of painted portraits. Through the lens of historical and contemporary artists, we’ll delve into the artistry behind utilising reference photos and create a painted portrait from the ground up.

As part of the course, you’ll embark on a self portrait project. In May, we’ll hold a dedicated photo shoot where Ilona will take a portrait of you. The image will become the foundation for your painting, allowing you to work directly from a personal reference and explore the unique, and rewarding, challenge of portraying your own likeness and presence on canvas.

Our aim? To reshape the conversation around the use and construction of reference imagery. Break free from misconceptions like “real painters don’t use reference photos” – in fact, photography can elevate your painting practice, particularly with a strategic approach. Join us as we learn to leverage photography’s strengths, creating vibrant portraits that blend accuracy with artistic expression.

By the end of the course, you will emerge with the skills and confidence to create expressive painted portraits that transcend mere likeness, capturing the essence and spirit of your subjects.

Key topics covered include:
- Underpainting mastery
- Sighting for Accuracy
- Beyond Photorealism
- Photoshop and Colour Palette Exploration
- Expression and Emotion
